Looking for alternatives to Glacier hikes? If you’ve ever tried to find parking at Glacier National Park on a summer morning, you know it can be… intense. Don’t get us wrong, Glacier is popular for good reason, but what if you could skip the crowds, find easy parking, and still take in gorgeous Montana views?
Luckily, there are no shortage of great hiking trails in the Flathead Valley, and even some leaving right from town in Whitefish!
The Flathead National Forest offers easy access, fewer people, and the same epic landscapes you came for. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or a local looking for a new favorite trail, here are three hikes that showcase the beauty of Flathead National Forest without the hassle.

Danny On Trail- Big Mountain (Whitefish Mountain Resort)
Distance: 3.8 to 8 miles (depending on route)
Trailhead: Base Lodge or Summit, Whitefish Mountain Resort
Why we love it: A local favorite with multiple route options. Start at the bottom and opt for a leg-burning hike to the summit, or take the scenic lift up and enjoy a pleasant hike down. You can even enjoy a beverage or snack at the summit house! Either way, you’ll get stunning views of the Flathead Valley, Flathead Lake, and even Glacier in the distance.

Swift Creek Overlook
Distance: 1.6 miles out-and-back
Trailhead: Swift Creek Trailhead, ~15 minutes from Whitefish
Why we love it: A peaceful forest trail that leads to a beautiful overlook of the Swift Creek drainage and surrounding peaks. It’s quick, quiet, and perfect for a morning or sunset hike. Ideal for beginners, families, or anyone looking for an easy adventure with great views, without the Glacier crowds. Looking for more adventure? Consider combining this hike with a scenic e-bike ride and tour!
Tally Lake Overlook
Distance: 2.6 miles (round trip)
Trailhead: Near Tally Lake Campground
